Artificial intelligence is making businesses more productive. It’s also making cybercriminals more dangerous. If you run a small or medium business in London, here’s what that means for you – and what you can do about it.

The Double-Edged Sword of AI

AI tools are genuinely useful. They help businesses write faster, analyse data, automate repetitive tasks, and serve customers better. Most business owners are aware of this side of the story.

What gets far less attention is the other side. The same AI tools that are helping legitimate businesses work smarter are being used by cybercriminals to attack faster, more convincingly, and at a scale that wasn’t possible two years ago.

The threat landscape hasn’t just grown. It has fundamentally changed.

How AI Is Being Used to Attack Businesses

Phishing Emails That Are Almost Impossible to Spot

Traditional phishing emails were relatively easy to identify. Poor grammar, generic greetings, obvious spelling mistakes. Most people learned to spot them.

AI has changed that completely. Criminals now use large language models to generate phishing emails that are grammatically perfect, contextually relevant, and personalised to the recipient. They can scrape your LinkedIn profile, your company website, and public information to craft an email that references your actual clients, your team members, or a recent project.

The result is emails that look entirely legitimate – from what appears to be a trusted contact, referencing something real, asking for something plausible. The click rate on AI-generated phishing emails is significantly higher than traditional attacks.

Deepfake Voice and Video Fraud

This is newer and less well known, but it is already happening to businesses in the UK.

AI can now clone a person’s voice from as little as a few seconds of audio. Criminals use this to impersonate senior executives, calling finance teams and instructing them to make urgent bank transfers. In some cases, video deepfakes have been used in fake video calls to add further credibility.

A finance manager receiving a call that sounds exactly like the CEO asking for a same-day payment is in a genuinely difficult position. This type of attack bypasses almost all traditional security awareness training because the threat doesn’t look like a threat.

Automated Vulnerability Scanning

Previously, identifying weaknesses in a business’s IT systems required skilled human attackers spending significant time on reconnaissance. AI has automated this process.

Criminal tools can now scan thousands of businesses simultaneously, identifying unpatched software, misconfigured systems, weak passwords, and open ports – all without human involvement. By the time an attack is launched, the groundwork has already been done automatically.

For small businesses that haven’t kept their systems up to date, this significantly increases the likelihood of being targeted.

AI-Generated Malware

Security tools work partly by recognising the signatures of known malware. AI is now being used to generate malware that constantly rewrites its own code, making it harder for traditional antivirus software to detect. Each variant looks different enough to avoid detection while doing the same damage.

Why SMEs Are Particularly Vulnerable

Large enterprises have dedicated security teams, enterprise-grade tools, and significant budgets for threat detection. SMEs typically have none of these things.

Cybercriminals know this. SMEs are attractive targets precisely because they hold valuable data – client records, financial information, payment details – but often have minimal defences in place. AI-powered attacks make it economical to target smaller businesses at scale in a way that wasn’t viable before.

The assumption that small businesses aren’t worth attacking is no longer true. Automated tools make it just as easy to attack a ten-person business as a thousand-person enterprise.

What This Means in Practice

The types of incidents Guard IQ sees most frequently among SMEs in London:

Business email compromise – a staff member receives a convincing email from what appears to be a supplier or director, makes a payment, and the money is gone.

Ransomware – systems are encrypted and the business is unable to operate until a ransom is paid or systems are restored from backup.

Credential theft – login details are stolen through phishing, giving criminals access to email accounts, cloud storage, or financial systems.

All three are increasingly being enabled or enhanced by AI tools on the attacker’s side.

What You Can Do About It

The good news is that the fundamentals of protection haven’t changed, even if the threats have.

Multi-factor authentication – even if a password is stolen, MFA stops the attacker from getting in. This is the single highest-impact control for most SMEs.

Email security – modern email filtering uses AI on the defensive side to detect and quarantine suspicious emails before they reach your inbox.

Staff awareness – your team needs to know that phishing emails no longer look like phishing emails. Training needs to reflect the current threat, not the threats of five years ago.

Endpoint detection and response – traditional antivirus is no longer sufficient. EDR tools monitor behaviour rather than just signatures, catching threats that signature-based tools miss.

Patching and updates – automated vulnerability scanning finds unpatched systems. Keeping software up to date removes the most commonly exploited entry points.

None of these require an enterprise budget. They do require someone who knows what they’re doing to implement and manage them properly.

The Bottom Line

AI is not a future threat. It is being used against businesses right now, today, including small businesses that assume they are too small to be worth targeting.

The businesses that will come out of this period in good shape are the ones that treat cybersecurity as an ongoing managed function rather than a one-off project.

If you’re not sure where your business currently stands, the right first step is a straightforward security assessment.

If you’ve been asked about ISO 27001 by a client, partner, or insurer and weren’t sure what to say, you’re not alone. Here’s what it actually means and whether it’s something your business needs to pursue.

What Is ISO 27001?

ISO 27001 is an internationally recognised standard for information security management. In plain English, it’s a framework that proves your business takes the security of its data seriously and has the policies, processes, and controls in place to back that up.

Getting certified means an accredited body has independently audited your business and confirmed that your approach to information security meets the standard. It’s not a one-off tick box. It requires ongoing maintenance and regular reviews to keep the certification active.

What Does ISO 27001 Actually Cover?

The standard covers how your business manages information security across three areas:

People: Do your staff understand their responsibilities around data? Are there clear policies covering acceptable use, access controls, and what to do if something goes wrong?

Processes: Does your business have documented procedures for managing risks, handling incidents, and reviewing security regularly?

Technology: Are the right technical controls in place to protect your systems, devices, and data from unauthorised access or loss?

ISO 27001 doesn’t prescribe exactly what tools you use. It requires you to assess your risks and implement controls that are appropriate for your business.

Who Asks for ISO 27001?

Typically, larger enterprises, public sector bodies, and regulated organisations require their suppliers and partners to hold ISO 27001 certification before they’ll do business with them. If you’re trying to win contracts with NHS trusts, central government, financial institutions, or large corporates, there’s a good chance ISO 27001 will come up.

It’s also increasingly requested by cyber insurers as a condition of coverage, particularly for businesses handling large volumes of sensitive data.

Does Your Business Need ISO 27001?

The honest answer is: it depends on who you’re selling to and what data you handle.

You likely need ISO 27001 if:

A current or prospective client has asked you for it directly

You’re tendering for public sector or NHS contracts

Your cyber insurer has raised it as a requirement

You handle large volumes of sensitive personal or financial data

You want to differentiate your business in a competitive market

You probably don’t need ISO 27001 right now if:

Your clients are small businesses with no formal supplier requirements

You’re an SME with under 20 staff and no regulated sector clients

You haven’t been asked for it yet

For most small businesses in London, Cyber Essentials is the more appropriate starting point. It’s government-backed, faster to achieve, less expensive, and required for central government contracts. Many businesses treat it as the foundation before pursuing ISO 27001 as they grow.

How Long Does ISO 27001 Take?

For a small to medium business, the process typically takes between three and twelve months depending on how mature your existing security practices are. Businesses starting from scratch will need longer. Those who already have Cyber Essentials or documented security policies in place will move faster.

The process involves a gap analysis, implementing the required controls, internal audits, and a two-stage external audit by an accredited certification body.

What’s the Difference Between ISO 27001 and Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials

ISO 27001

Scope

Technical controls only

People, processes and technology

Audit

Self-assessed or external scan

Independent third-party audit

Time to achieve

Weeks

Months

Cost

Lower

Higher

Best for

SMEs, government contracts

Enterprise suppliers, regulated sectors

Recognised

UK

International

Where Does Guard IQ Fit In?

Guard IQ helps London SMEs navigate compliance requirements, from Cyber Essentials and DSPT through to preparing for ISO 27001. If you’ve been asked about ISO 27001 and aren’t sure where to start, the right first step is understanding where your business currently stands.

Most small businesses only call IT support when something breaks. The internet drops, emails stop syncing, or the Wi-Fi grinds to a halt and work comes to a standstill.

In North West London, we see this pattern every week. And while same-day fixes are often possible, many of these problems were avoidable.

This article explains why reactive IT support costs London SMEs more in the long run, and how a simple proactive maintenance approach keeps teams productive with fewer interruptions.

The Hidden Cost of Reactive IT Support

When IT is handled reactively, problems tend to show up at the worst possible time.

Common examples we see include:

Internet outages during client calls

Emails failing to send or receive

Slow cloud systems during busy periods

Wi-Fi dropping across the office

Security warnings ignored until accounts are compromised

Each incident may only last an hour or two, but the real cost is lost focus, delayed work, frustrated staff, and missed opportunities.

For many SMEs, the downtime costs far more than the fix itself.

If this sounds familiar, a short diagnostic visit can usually pinpoint the cause before it turns into downtime.

Why Problems Build Up Without Anyone Noticing

Most office IT issues do not appear overnight. They develop gradually through neglect or small changes that go unchecked.

Typical causes include:

Routers and firewalls never updated

Wi-Fi networks overloaded as the team grows

Old laptops struggling with modern cloud tools

Email security settings left at default

Backup systems never tested

Because everything works “well enough” day to day, these risks stay hidden until something finally breaks.

What Proactive IT Maintenance Actually Means

Proactive IT maintenance does not mean expensive enterprise contracts or complex systems.

For most London SMEs, it simply means:

Regular checks on internet and Wi-Fi performance

Keeping routers, firewalls, and devices updated

Reviewing email security and access controls

Making sure backups are running and recoverable

Fixing small issues before they cause downtime

The goal is stability and predictability, not constant tinkering.

Not sure where your setup stands?
A one-off diagnostics visit can highlight simple fixes and priority risks, with clear advice and no jargon.

The Business Benefits of a Proactive Approach

When IT is maintained properly, the difference is noticeable.

Businesses typically experience:

Fewer urgent IT emergencies

More reliable video calls and VOIP

Faster access to cloud systems

Less staff time wasted on troubleshooting

Clear accountability when something does go wrong

Instead of reacting to problems, business owners regain control of their working day.

Why This Matters More for London SMEs

London businesses rely heavily on internet, email, and cloud platforms to operate.

With flexible working, shared offices, and client expectations around fast response times, even short outages can have a disproportionate impact.

For SMEs without internal IT staff, having a local expert who understands their setup and can act quickly makes a significant difference.

We support small businesses across North West London with same-day fixes when needed and ongoing support when it makes sense.

A Smarter Way to Handle IT Support

Emergency fixes will always be necessary sometimes. Hardware fails, internet providers go down, and mistakes happen.

But relying only on emergency support is like running a business without insurance or maintenance.

A combination of:

Same-day fixes when needed

Regular health checks

Clear advice without jargon

leads to fewer disruptions and lower overall IT stress.

If This Sounds Familiar

If your business only thinks about IT when something breaks, it may be time to change the approach.

A short diagnostic visit can often highlight simple improvements that prevent repeated issues.

If this sounds familiar, we should talk.
